Imagine a smoke-free world.
Philip Morris International’s U.S. businesses have a plan to get there.
About 45 million U.S. consumers over 21 regularly use nicotine and nearly 30 million of them use the most harmful form—cigarettes. Philip Morris International’s (“PMI”) U.S. businesses are on a mission to improve U.S. public health by offering innovative products that help them leave cigarettes and other traditional tobacco products behind for good.
Zero percent of PMI’s revenue comes from conventional cigarette sales in the U.S. and the company never sold products in the U.S. until it acquired Swedish Match in late 2022.
Better Alternatives:
PMI businesses are the leaders in smoke-free products in the U.S. PMI’s U.S. affiliates, including Swedish Match North America (“PMI U.S.”), are building a science-backed portfolio and:
1. Offering better alternatives for adults 21+ who smoke
We’re putting our money where our mouth is to deliver on our mission to end smoking across the nation by offering products that are satisfying smoke-free alternatives for consumers 21 and over who smoke.”
Smoke-free product offerings
Globally, PMI has invested more than $12.5 billion since 2008 to develop and commercialize a range of smoke-free products. The FDA has authorized two of our affiliates’ products, General Snus and versions of the IQOS tobacco heating system, as “modified risk tobacco products” which means the FDA has found them “appropriate for the promotion of public health.”
While FDA applications for nicotine pouches remain pending, progress to date shows that nicotine pouches can help many nicotine consumers adults 21+ transition from cigarette smoking and other traditional tobacco products. To meet the growing demand for smoke-free products, PMI and its Swedish Match affiliate are investing more than $800 million to increase U.S. production of nicotine pouches in Colorado and Kentucky, helping accelerate progress toward a smoke-free U.S.
For many adults who smoke, the ritual of having something to hold in hand is important. PMI U.S. is bringing innovative heat-not-burn devices to the U.S. market. Although they’re not risk-free, the devices significantly reduce the production of harmful chemicals.
