PMI recognized as global leader in supplier engagement on climate change by CDP for fifth consecutive year
10 Feb 2022For the fifth successive year, Philip Morris International (PMI) has been named as a global leader for its supplier engagement on climate change by the international non-profit CDP. PMI has also once again been included on the Supplier Engagement Leaderboard, placing the company among the top eight percent of companies who disclosed their environmental impact in CDP’s climate questionnaire.
The questionnaire allows CDP to assess and rate how effectively each company is engaging its suppliers on climate change. It includes questions about governance, targets, supply chain (scope 3) emissions, and value chain engagement. Companies can play a crucial role in raising awareness about ESG issues and support suppliers in the transition toward a net-zero sustainable economy.
“I am proud that PMI has been once more recognized as a global leader in sustainability for our efforts in supplier engagement,” said Hafed Belhadj, PMI’s Chief Procurement Officer. “We strongly believe that all value chain partners need to work together to make a lasting positive impact on the environment and society as a whole, and we have a role to play in that space. Our suppliers have shown tremendous commitment, and their outstanding efforts over the years have helped us drive our sustainability agenda forward.”
We strongly believe that all value chain partners need to work together to make a lasting positive impact on the environment and society as a whole, and we have a role to play in that space.
PMI has laid out its ambitious carbon-neutrality targets in its Low-Carbon Transition Plan, published in October 2021. Supplier engagement is essential for PMI is to achieve its CO2 reduction targets within Scope 3, which will allow the company to maintain its role in climate actions.
The Plan introduces an ambition for PMI’s critical suppliers to adopt science-based targets (SBTs) in line with those PMI itself is already working toward. These SBTs align with the 1.5 °C pathway central to meeting the goals of the Paris Agreement.
We provide our suppliers with guidance and support to reduce environmental impacts related to tobacco growing and most importantly, we partner with them on the implementation of climate mitigation actions that will allow to increase the resiliency of our agricultural supply chain to the risks posed by climate change.
“PMI’s tobacco supply chain represents a major part of our total carbon footprint,” says Pedro Braga, PMI’s Vice President, Leaf. “The role of suppliers in the decarbonization of our business is therefore very relevant. We provide them with guidance and support to reduce environmental impacts related to tobacco growing and most importantly, we partner with them on the implementation of climate mitigation actions that will allow to increase the resiliency of our agricultural supply chain to the risks posed by climate change. PMI’s inclusion in the CDP Supplier Engagement Leaderboard shows that we are on the right path.”
