Tobacco and Nicotine Database
The Tobacco and Nicotine Database is a collection of data from publicly available sources on the tobacco and nicotine industry. It is not specific to PMI. Rather, it gives an extensive global overview of the entire value chain across markets, from tobacco growing and initial processing, to manufacturing, retail trade, government revenues, illicit trade and the end consumer.
The database includes more than 130 variables across 191 countries. The range of variables extends from the number of tobacco farms to the value of manufactured cigarettes, the number of employees in retail, the volume of cigarette exports in tons, the number of current cigarette smokers, the government revenues from tobacco excise taxes, and the total tax per cigarette. For this third release of the database, we included nine years of data for each variable and country, from 2010 to 2019, to allow for comparisons over time. With each release, more recent estimates will be added.

In the development of this database, we were assisted by Nomisma, an unaffiliated company based in Bologna, Italy, that carries out economic research and consulting for businesses, associations and public administrations at national and international levels. The information in this database is drawn primarily from government and other publicly available third-party sources; in all cases, the database shows which data source was used.
We cannot guarantee that the information in the database is fully accurate, complete, or current. Methodologies, assumptions and opinions used by third parties in the preparation of their estimates are theirs alone and do not represent, and may differ from, our estimates, methodologies, assumptions and opinions. We have not verified these estimates and did not participate in their preparation.
We do not offer a view on the approaches or methodologies used in such estimates, and do not undertake to correct or update these estimates. Such estimates may vary from our own estimates for similar categories of data.
